Introduction of the Joly speakers

The "Joly" brand has been around for 20 some years. Mr. Tsao is a person responsible for the development and production techniques of the Joly speakers and he has been in the speaker business for over 30 years. He said that he never listened to stereos before because the traditional speakers have many problems and disadvantages - just like his friend working in a food processing factory said that he never had the processed food; again, this is just like what the modern parents tell their kids - these processed foods are junks.

However, in an accidental occasion, Mr. Tsao discovered a new design for speakers to get the sounds clearly duplicated from those speakers. Then, he applied patent right form the patent offices in the US and some European countries. While those patent approvals were still in pending, he still kept on working on the improvements of the speakers, However, he still did not like to listen to music in that time either. Later. A new technician (he likes to plays with all kinds of stereos) of the company said that Mr. Tsao's improved speakers are good enough to enter the market after he listen to the sounds of those speakers. Four yours after that, Mr. Tsao applied for the patents again, but this time he provided the patent offices with the technical backing to his invention. Now, he has obtained the patents from Germany, Britain, France and the US.

Mr. Tsao took the speakers with somewhat improved design (not quite his latest design) to a stereo store for a trial. After comparison, the Rogers L/S 3/5 with his design sounded better (clearer, more natural and more realistic) than the Rogers speakers that were 5 times bigger. This was a proof the speakers with his design were superior ! The boss of that stereo store borrowed those new speakers (will be referred to as the "Joly speakers" in the following) and the boss went from Taichung to Taipei in that might to talk to his partners in Taipei. He and his friends started some comparison (between the Joly and the other speakers) immediately; next morning , those three persons went to the Joly speaker factory to ask Joly Company to agree that they being the sole distributor of the Joly speakers (including the domestic and overseas sales) and Joly Company will be prohibited to sell its speakers to any other companies. Joly Company demanded that those three persons provided the purchase quantity and amount for its speakers. However, those three persons did not have enough money, hence, they decided to talk to some speaker companies for this. The two sides agreed to have a future meeting - until those three persons come up with the proper capital and plans.

After Joly company waited for their reply for two months, Mr. Tsao went to visit the same store in Taichung again. He saw that the contains of the store have changed a lot - before, the interior of the store was pretty empty; but now it is full of all kinds of stereos. Later, he discovered the reason of this change was because many importing companies had changed their business way with the store - those companies did not ask for any deposits for their stereos beforehand and the payments of those stereos were due only after the stereos were sold. The store boss said that the store was not be able to sell the joly speakers until all their group's speakers have been sold. In fact, that was only an excuse.

So, Joly Company went to talk to the large importing companies like Sun Moon Stereo and Yi Shi Stereo. After those companies listened to the Joly speakers, they wanted to sell the Joly speakers in the beginning; but after a while, they did not want to do so.

One well-known journalist told Mr. Taso that he could go to visit the very top stereo person in Taiwan - the person (Mr. Shin Jio Suei) is a professor in Taiwan Normal University and he was the first stereo critic in Taiwan that possessed a professorship an Ph.D. in the earlier time. After he listened to the Joly speakers, he was so astonished by them that some "light beams" come out of his eyes right away. He then ask Mr. Taso what country those speakers were made in. Made in Taiwan, Mr. Taso replied. Then, the professor asked him with excitement where (in the US or Europe) their units were made. Mr. Taso gave the same response. Upon hearing this, the professor's facial expression quickly changed to a serious one and said that those speakers sounded good, but not the best in the world .... Mr. Taso asked the professor if the professor could introduce some large companies to him to assist the speaker sales. The professor responded that those speakers should be shipped to the US or some European countries first to be labeled with some kind of overseas brand --- then those speakers will be the hot items after they are sent back to Taiwan and Mr. Taso could sell thousands of those speakers in Taiwan per month by the large stereo companies about this later. After a few days, Mr. Taso went to visit the professor again, but the professor's attitude changed quite a bit. The professor's intention was very obvious ....

To tell the would the merits of the Joly speakers, Joly Company took its speakers to enter the three largest invention shows (in the US, Germany and Geneva) in the would and won the awards. Later, the Joly speakers won Golden Mind Award of Taiwan, too. However, these awards made the domestic speaker companies frightened. Not only those companies did not sell the Joly speakers, but also spread out the rumors that Joly Company were liar and started to block Joly out of the market by a jointed conspiracy. The largest stereo shows have been held by China Stereo Association annually. For the past three years (1995 to 1997), the association did not allow Joly to participate in those shows. Joly Company then used to the computer network (BBS) to express our ideas about good stereos and sounds. Those large companies managed to manipulate the network and got all the Joly's articles eliminated on the network as well as posted some articles to make some slanderous statements on Joly to mislead people that Joly were a liar and to make people angry at us.

In the beginning, Joly hoped that the large companies should sell its products; after their refusal, Joly had to sell the products itself. Then, Joly was blocked out of the market by their jointed action, and even the last free speech media (the academic computer network) charged Joly as a mad and evil person, liar, etc. (this action was against the "academic spirit" too). In addition, they insisted there is no explanation needed from Joly and got rid of all the Joly's articles.

About the overseas market, Joy has been attending the CES and Hi-Fi shows for the past 4 years. However, how do we explain this: all of those European and American company representatives said that they were pretty interested in selling the Joly's speakers on the shows (they had to go back to talk to their local speaker companies and stores before coming up with a formal plan); but later, all of them had changed their minds. Maybe this is just like a statement from a person - if they let Joly enter the European and American markets, all their speaker companies will be shutting down.

About the fact that those European and American companies kept Joly out is forgivable because they needed to protect their own markets. But the domestic companies jointly blocked us (their own kind !) from the market to let Joly shutting down is not right and is against the law. In addition, their conspiracy actually weaken the competitiveness of Taiwan.

Joly has tried all the possible ways to break out of those obstacles except the legal action. However, it seems to us that the legal action is our only exit out of this unjust situation. If we shuts down, both the right of the consuming public and the reputation of the government will be hurt.

After 4 years of Joly's struggle in the market, we finally discovered one thing - "a fact must have been confirmed by actual experimentation". A good example is: people assume that good products can have better sales - is this true (for our case) ?

Suppose that one person invents a kind of cigarettes that can help people to quit smoking, do you think the cigarettes will be selling in great amount ? Will the stores want to sell those cigarettes ? Will the supermarkets and drugstores sell them ?
